Editing a Headshot – The Headshot Guys, Gold Coast & Brisbane
Photography and editing go hand in hand but is it ok to re-touch a headshot and how much re-touching is “acceptable”?
The definition of photo re-touching is the application of image editing techniques to photographs in order to create an illusion or deception after the original photographing took place. Basically it is a process of improving the image by removing imperfections.
Headshot re-touching is generally acceptable if the thing/s being altered is not one of your permanent features. This rule has much more significance if your headshot is for acting or modelling, rather than for a business card or website.
How much re-touching is acceptable can be measured by the use of makeup and permanency.
For example if you have acne blemishes or skin discolouration which could be hidden by the use of makeup or will clear up in time, it would be acceptable to have this edited from your photo.
A scar, mole or feature which defines your face and is a permanent feature which cannot be disguised using makeup should generally not be edited from your photo. Discuss such features with your photographer and work together to create a headshot which showcases you not your imperfections.
