Increasingly over the past few months I have been asked to evaluate Headshots & Profile Images and provide Feedback. I try to be as objective as possible & so I thought that this could become a service that people might enjoy that also gives me an opportunity to connect and create a dialogue around my favorite topic, Headshots.
The evaluation that I make looks at a number of areas, you could evaluate your own Image with the following guidelines –
Does the shot look amateurish or does it look like it has been taken with a Phone Camera ?
Is the subject clear & well lit ?
Is the subject in focus ?
Does the image have a busy background ?
Is the subject wearing a busy or non-professional looking top ?
Is it obvious that the person has been cut or cropped from a bigger Image ?
Is it obvious that the image was taken at a social function of some type ?
Are there any other people in the image ?
Are there any pets in the image ? If you are a working member of the RSPCA, it works. If you are a Sales person for a cosmetics company, is it relevant that you have a pet cat ?
If it is a full length image, can you see the face ?
Is the person doing some type of physical activity ? If you are using a shot of you Rock Climbing, fantastic if you are a rock climbing instructor ! If you are a Marketing Manager it doesn’t quite work !
Does the subjects expression look confident, natural and unforced or do they look “out to lunch”, “zoned out ” or like a deer in the Headlights.
Are the subjects eyes level with the camera. If the eyes are above the camera it can give the impression that you are looking down on the viewer and coming across as a snob or arrogant. Most people would have heard their Mum say ” don’t look down your nose at people ”
How many chins does the subject have ?
Most people I am sure can look at this list and make a pretty good evaluation of their own Image. Their next decision is, do I need a professional Photographer to take my Headshot. As a professional Headshot photographer of course I am going to Yes ! Whats a professional Headshot worth ? Its a little bit of a ” How long is a piece of string question” There are photographers that will do it for $50.00. If you pay $50.00 for your Headshot pay particular attention to the above points. A professional photographer that only charges $50.00 per shoot is probably struggling to make a living and be wary of the photographers that will stand you up against the wall and tell you to smile. Unless you a model that can smile on cue it may end up looking forced and not very warm.
A good professional Headshot should last you approx 3 – 4 years. If you come to my studio that’s less than $100.00 per year.

About 2 years ago after some sound advice from my Business Coach – Rock Paper Scissors Coaching. I made the decision to niche myself into the Headshot Market.
There were a few contributing factors. This will be my attempt to explain them.
1. Research told me and my own personal experience confirmed that Social Media was here to stay and although it might change over time and in another 5 years it might not be Facebook or Linked In there will be something.
2. All of our online experiences, whatever they are, groups, social media, blogs, websites all involve providing a profile image of some type.
3. People want to do business with people not necessarily with companies.
4. Relationship marketing is growing and will continue to grow.
5. Our online profile along with our activity online will become as important as the products we sell.
6. We have become very imagery aware and can instantly tell the difference between a professional quality image and a snapshot.
Since I made the decision we have started to follow the Amercian trend and the desire for a Professional Quality Headshot for business and corporate identities has started to explode.
Statistics are now also starting to point to the need for a Professional Quality Headshot.
People spend 4 seconds evaluating you based on your Profile Image and on Linked In, if your Image is obviously not professional then 86% of people won’t even read your profile information.
In my next blog I will talk about my sessions and the 2 major principles they are based upon –
1. People hate having their photograph taken
2. Most people have never been taught about their face, how to hold their head, how to form expressions using their mouth, eyes & eyebrows that will ensure that they look confident, approachable, professional and more importantly look like themselves and show their personality.

Having staff photos or Headshots on your website is an essential part of your marketing strategy.
Clients want to see who they are doing business with and want to be able to put a face to the name when they go in to meet them. The need to be able to put a face to the name is equally important for your staff in customer service roles, or international teams, for senior management teams: anyone in the business.
Using a professional Photographer can pay dividends.
In recent times, prospective clients are getting selective and are willing to spend more time researching a company before they consider using them. Clients want to know exactly who they are dealing with before they part with their hard earned cash.
One way of making your company more accessible to the public is to display a short biography about staff members and a professional good quality photograph. It is becoming more and more important to make your company as customer friendly as possible to help you win the deal.
Everyone is an individual and they all have an individual role within a company, so it is important to set each person apart from their work colleagues. It is important to maintain a consistent flow with the style of the images, but it’s also important to make each image stand out in its own right.
Hiring a professional photographer to take your staff photos is the best option to ensure you get high quality photographs. Taking photos that are less than professional can mean the company lose out to a rival just because they did not see the value in using a professional photographer to improve their public image.
BradKay Photographix offer Professional top quality headshots that will impress.

Before you have your headshots taken there are a number of things you should think about such as the reason for getting a professional headshot, how you plan to use them and the visual branding messages you would like to communicate.
Headshots are professional portraits taken of actors, musicians, business women and men and job seekers. These supplement your resume or portfolio and give casting directors and agencies an idea of what you look like and how you may fit the job. Once hired, your headshot may be used to promote the company or the production you are in.
There are different types of headshots for various purposes, including commercial, glamour, theatrical and executive headshots.
Businesses have different marketing tools at their disposal. Some marketing tools are used for gathering customer data. The key is deciding which marketing tools you need to accomplish your primary objectives. Often you will use several different marketing tools.
With social media and our online presence playing such a huge role today in the success of our businesses, it is now more important than ever to be seen often, and in the best possible light.
The internet is one of the most widely used tools in marketing. Placing your headshot on your internet website can help build business by bringing in new customers and retaining existing ones. It is an opportunity to portray an image to your potential clients, to share your brand, and show the face behind the business.
A professional quality website can be an effective tool to display your headshot as it allows consumers to view products and services, hours and other information without having to spend time on the phone or driving to the location. Having your headshot displayed on the website enables the clients and consumers to have an idea of who they are dealing with. We forget that when potential customers are looking at a business online, they are also looking at who works there and how they conduct business.
Businesses use social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to promote themselves. Businesses can update their profiles on these platforms regularly with information that customers need to know, including headshots of themselves.
Lawyers, consultants, students, designers and financial planners…why would they want to have their headshot on their business cards? Because it is great to put a face to a name, it reminds people who they talked to when they find the business card in their pocket.

The camera can be quite an intimidating instrument when it’s staring right at you. Once in front of it, the majority of us just seem to tense up. What is it about the way models pose that set them apart from the average person? What are the tricks they are using that make them turn out so much better. The answer is Squinching!
SQUINCH? The secret facial expressions that can make anyone look more photogenic in an instant.
What is Squinching? According to photographer Peter Hurley it is the art of making your eyes look smaller. If you do this every time, you will look better in photos. It’s not quite squinting, says professional photographer Peter Hurley. Scrunching up your eyes and squinting is not cool. Squinching involves the subtle art of lifting your lower eyelids so that you appear self-assured and smouldering. Confidence comes from the eyes.
Squinching is the zone where the magic happens; the difference between a good portrait with jawline and attitude to the eyes. Every excellent portrait has mood, emotion and attitude. Squinching is one of the tricks to how great portraits become great by accentuating the attitude shown in the eyes.
To Squinch or not to Squinch is never the question especially in photography. The technique used by professional photographers, professional models and actors. Until now it was kept a secret and there was never a name for it. Thanks to Professional Photographer Peter Hurley, “Squinching” finally has a name.
To avoid the dreaded double chin in photos, Hurley suggests tilting your head forward, emu-style, with your chin slightly dropped and your forehead slightly forward.
Practice Squinching in front of the bathroom mirror.
BradKay Photographix can help you get the best headshot using this and many other useful techniques.
